July 4th by Kai

If you told the colonists that in the future, we would celebrate independence from England by intentionally setting off colorful bombs over our heads, they’d probably put you on a horse and send you up to a priest to cure you of insanity. Today the average family walks, drives, buses, or bikes to the nearest or best fireworks display in the area, our family being no exception. Yesterday, we walked several miles to 14th street to see how New York fireworks compared to the ones we usually see in Sanibel, Florida. The answer? They compared really, really well. There were five barges going of simultaneously (four of which we could see), and 75,000 cartons of fireworks in total. Huge showers of gold, red, white, blue, and green lit up the sky for half an hour; it was so loud you could feel the vibrations from where we stood, a mile away. Incredible displays of blinding sparks flared across the skyline in an array of brilliant colors. It was a very close second to the best fireworks I’ve ever seen, in Doyét, France. Definitely worth the walk. 😜

We wouldn’t have even known about the marching band thing if you hadn’t told us- we couldn’t hear anything! 😛

Haha, yeah, apparently the fireworks were timed to music that this marching band played, but all we could hear was the explosions. The ones we saw in France were timed to these French pop songs, which we could actually hear, and were literally 10 yards from us, so they had a kind of unfair advantage. 🙂
